Savannah Guthrie was eager to resume her ‘normal’ life despite the uncertainty of whether her mother was dead or alive. Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her home in the middle of the night. The authorities believe she was kidnapped, but they don’t know why or by whom. She’s been missing ever since.
After taking a two-month break during the investigation, Savannah Guthrie returned to the Today Show in early April. However, she abruptly disappeared from the May 6 episode in the middle of the live broadcast. Keep reading to find out more about the surprising incident.
Savannah Guthrie Makes Abrupt Exit During Live Broadcast
Savannah Guthrie’s decision to return to the morning program was a little unexpected. Her mother still hadn’t been found, and the police investigation hadn’t had any new leads since shortly after the presumed abduction. The Today host left New York City for Tucson, Arizona, immediately after her mom was reported missing. She stayed there for weeks, waiting for word from the alleged kidnappers.
However, she decided the best way to honor her mother was not to give in to fear and resume her life in New York, including her day job. But it might have been too much, too soon.

“Savannah had to leave a little early. She’ll be right back tomorrow, though,” he said, with no further explanation. It left viewers stunned and wondering if news came about her mother’s case.
Triggered By Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day is a little early this year. It’s celebrated in the U.S. on Sunday, May 10th. The Today Show did a segment on flowers for Mom’s special day. The segment aired during the same episode that Savannah Guthrie abruptly left. Multiple outlets reached out to NBC for an explanation about her unexpected exit, but didn’t receive a response, sparking speculation online.
- “Not sure why she left abruptly but I have to say, watching the show since her return is extremely uncomfortable.”
- “I don’t know but she looked awful this am. Maybe she was sick or something.”
- “Also Mother’s Day is coming up. That holiday triggered me for years after my mom died. You can’t escape it in the weeks leading up to it.”
