What Happened? Myrka Cantu Explains How Her 10-Month-Old Son Suffered a Skull Injury

Myrka Cantu is navigating a scary chapter.

The Unexpected season four star shared how her and husband Juan Castillo‘s 10-month-old son Alejandro had suffered a brain injury while they were co-sleeping in their bed.

“He fell off the bed,” Myrka said in a Nov. 14 Instagram video. “I definitely should’ve taken the fact that he’s crawling into consideration when co-sleeping. I woke up in the middle of the night. I don’t know if he started playing or if he was sleep-crawling, and he straight up fell off the bed.”

“I ended up taking him to the ER,” the 22-year-old noted, adding that they were airlifted to a nearby children’s hospital. “He did fracture his skull and he got a brain bleed. Not gonna lie to y’all and tell y’all that I’ve been perfectly fine because I’ve been crying like there’s absolutely no tomorrow. I’m running on no sleep.”

However, Myrka—who is pregnant with her fourth baby, her third with Juan—emphasized that Alejandro is on the mend.

“He is doing extremely well,” she said. “It’s not something that surgery can fix or anything like that. They haven’t even given him pain medication. They’ve just been giving him fluids and checking his vitals.”

Meanwhile, on the screen, she added the text, “He’s been acting 100 percent like himself and not fussy at all.”

Since the accident, Myrka doesn’t plan to cosleep—which the American Academy of Pediatrics has also advised against—in the future.

“He’s the first one I have ever coslept with as a baby and I promise you he’s the last,” the reality star captioned the Instagram post. “As safe as I was nothing could have prevented him falling off while we were asleep, other than him sleeping in his own crib ALONE.”

“My baby is so strong,” she continued. “I’m so inspired by him and I know we will look back at this teaching moment and be grateful for it ONE DAY.”

Myrka—who rose to fame on Unexpected with now-ex-boyfriend Ethan Ybarra—reflected on what she had learned from the situation.

“When I tell you this has been such a learning curve, that’s exactly what this is,” she said in a Nov. 18 follow-up video. “I just put his little ass in the playpen. I’m not risking nothing. No, no, no!”
